The Book of Order says, “When persons have been elected to the ordered ministry of ruling elder or deacon, the session shall provide a period of study and preparation, after which the session shall examine them as to their personal faith; knowledge of the doctrine, government, and discipline contained in the Constitution of the church; and the duties of the ministry.” (G-2.0402)

To assist pastors and Session moderators with this period of study and preparation, Susan Sharp Campbell, Associate for Educational Ministry, will be offering Officer Training that focuses on the above topics over two Sunday afternoons, Jan. 10 & 24, from 2 to 5 p.m. on Zoom. These two sessions will build on and connect with each other, so participants are expected to participate in both. Newly elected elders and deacons, as well as those who are currently on session, and their moderators are welcome to participate in this Officer Training.

The registration deadline is Monday, Jan. 4. This will give participants time to complete an advance assignment, which will enhance participation in the training, as parts of it will form the basis of breakout room discussion.

Participants may register as individuals, or whole sessions may register and participate together. Each participant will need a recent copy (2017-2019 or 2019-2021) of the PCUSA Book of Order that they can use to prepare and during the training sessions. Please note that as of Dec.3, the Presbytery office has three copies of the 2019-2021 Book of Order for sale; cost is $8.50 plus shipping if needed.
