Last week, Governor Justice provided an update on COVID-19 outbreaks at churches that have resumed in-person worship. As of June 13, the state reported a “handful of church-related outbreaks… ranging between five and eight cases per congregation” with at least 24 positive cases.

Governor Justice was referring to churches without plans for re-opening – no social distancing plans or other infection controls. Governor Justice encourages churches to PLAN for in-person worship, including social distancing, marking off pews, and wearing masks.

On the same day, WBOY out of Clarksburg reported that West Virginia DHHR confirmed 19 church outbreaks across the state, with the most significant being a church in Greenbrier County with 17 cases.

Pastoral leaders and sessions are strongly encouraged to make informed decision regarding the return to in-person worship and make a PLAN. The Presbytery website lists a number of excellent resources on the COVID-19 Resource Page. If you have questions, please contact General Presbyter Ed Thompson or Stated Clerk Maureen Wright.
